Dewitt Higgs Commemorated At
Annual Memorial Lecture Series

APRIL 2005 - Craig Higgs recently spoke in memory of his father, and founder of the firm, Higgs Fletcher & Mack, DeWitt “Dutch” Higgs, at the University of California San Diego’s annual DeWitt Higgs Memorial Lecture on April 11 at UCSD’s RIMAC Arena.

“I was honored to open this year’s DeWitt Higgs Memorial Lecture,” said Craig Higgs. “I know my father would be very proud to of what a significant role this lecture series plays in bringing important legal and social issues to the public.”

Earl Warren College and the Law and Society Program of UCSD sponsor the annual lecture in honor of DeWitt Higgs for his time served on the University of California Board of Regents, during which he actively took a stand on academic freedom. The DeWitt Higgs Memorial Lecture covers different contemporary legal issues each year. This year’s lecture discussed “Same-Sex Marriage,” will feature keynote speaker, San Francisco Mayor, Gavin Newsom.

DeWitt Higgs founded Higgs Fletcher & Mack in 1939, along with Ferdinand Fletcher. Higgs was a resource to governors, committees and legislators in making important judicial appointments to state and federal benches. He chaired the bipartisan Independent Commission, and prepared the model for fair and equally-proportioned voting districts in California.
